HQ. Headquarters. It’s the place where everyone gathers for a big-picture purpose.
At Always Learning HQ, the purpose is learning. Always. What began as a blog focused on education and parenting has grown into a more eclectic place where I’m sharing things I’m learning across a wide range of topics. Personal development, professional development, mental health, faith, college admissions, education, parenting, literacy, books, podcasts, technology, minimalism, digital media, social media, stewardship of resources (personal and planetary), work/school-life balance, home improvement, fashion, weather, coffee, high school and college sports, and family are all topics that fascinate me.
Who knows what I’ll get into in this space, so if you read a post you love, yay! Let me know. If you see something that bores you to tears, skip it. If you find inspiration or encouragement or just have something to say, leave a comment. I’m always grateful for your kind words. If you’ve written something you think I’d love to read, tell me about it. I’m all about learning new things.
Team… lol. This website is a team of one. My name is Norma, and I began teaching in 1988, after earning a BA in English Education and an MA in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (alternately known as the University of National Champions). By training and passion, I am a high school English teacher, but professionally I have had a wide array of experiences in the classroom. I’ve taught 7th grade through 12th grade, in public and private schools, from the most basic level to AP. My favorite literature course to teach is 10th-grade World Literature, and I love teaching writing electives. I’ve taught writers workshops and creative writing courses and journalism classes, mapping the curriculum and creating teaching materials for each.
Beyond my time as a professional educator, I’ve been a freelance writer and editor, a college essay coach, COO for a cheerleading company that went from local to regional to national, and I’ve sold real estate.
On a personal level, I am wife to an amazing man who fully supports my hopes and dreams. We met across from the Peabody Hall, home to the UNC School of Education, and we taught at the same high school for six years before our first child was born and I stepped out of the classroom for a few years to figure out how to raise the tiny humans in our house.
We have three children. Kelsey is a digital media editor living in NYC and working for a national news outlet. She is married to Alex, and they have an adorable puppy, Pumpkin, who has her own Instagram account. Zane is a graduate student in education and works as a graduate assistant in the research department of the library. As an undergraduate, he majored in history with teaching licensure and was a long snapper on the university’s football team. Zack currently attends a private K12 school where he is a senior and plays football and runs hurdles. Zack is a state-level medalist in the 110m high hurdles and the 300m intermediate hurdles. He is in the process of deciding where he’d like to go to college and what he’d like to study there.
